Microsoft will miss its target of getting Windows 10 installed on over 1 billion devices by 2018, the company has admitted.
In a statement issued to ZDNet, Microsoft said that it currently has the operating system running on over 350 million active devices, but that it will fail to hit its target due to changes made to its mobile phone business.
“Windows 10 is off to the hottest start in history with over 350m monthly active devices, with record customer satisfaction and engagement,” said a Microsoft spokesperson. “We’re pleased with our progress to date, but due to the focusing of our phone hardware business, it will take longer than FY18 for us to reach our goal of 1 billion monthly active devices. In the year ahead, we are excited about usage growth coming from commercial deployments and new devices — and increasing customer delight with Windows.”
Microsoft updated Xbox One consoles to run on Windows 10 last year and has a major new update heading to the platform early next month. The ‘Anniversary Update’ will introduce support for background music and voice command tool Cortana.
It will also introduce Xbox Play Anywhere support, allowing Windows 10 and Xbox One users to play select games across both platforms.
Windows 7 and 8 users, meanwhile, have until next Friday, July 29 to upgrade to Windows 10 for free.
