After a very long wait for season 2, Netflix has finally delivered another dose of Mindhunter, but as viewers wrap up another delicious bingeing session, questions are now hanging in the air over whether a third season of the dark FBI profiling drama is in the pipeline.
While no official announcement has yet been offered by the streaming giant, Mindhunter star Holt McCallany, who plays special agent Bill Tench in the well-received series, has been teasing some major changes in Mindhunter season 3, if it happens as planned. The actor has told THR that Mindhunter season 3 may be in for “a complete reimagining”, as part of a shooting location change from Pittsburgh to a new mystery area, and if you’re a fan of the long serial killer interview scenes that bookmarked the first two seasons, you’re in luck, because McCallany thinks season three will feature even more notorious crimials for Ford and Tench to grill.
The series is based on John Douglas’ bestselling book about his experiences in the early years of FBI profiling, and Douglas has some ideas about the kind of cases the show could cover in Mindhunter season 3 and beyond.

“There’s a lot more they could do,” Douglas told Collider. “A good one would be the Hanson case up in Alaska. Robert Hanson. He’s the one who hunted down women, flew them up into the wilderness in his airplane that he owned, and then he’d strip ’em down naked and hunt them down like wild animals. That’s going to be a big one. And Green River is going to be a big one. The BTK, they’re doing it now. I don’t know if they’ll come to a resolution… There are some other cases, and some cases are not well known, but they’re interesting cases. We were involved, my partner and I, in the John Gacy case. And of course you’ve got Ted Bundy. That was another agent in my unit who I sent down to spend time with Ted Bundy. That has to be one as well.”
McCallany doesn’t think a Mindhunter season 3 renewal is far off, reassuring fans that creator David Fincher told him “even if I fuck it up, it’s gonna go five seasons, and I don’t intend to fuck it up.”
