Ten years after its initial release, Minecraft remains a popular game despite its many competitors. According to Daniel Ahmad, Senior Analyst at Niko Partners, the game now has 112 million active monthly players across all of its version, which is up from 91 million last year.

The last time Microsoft announced its official numbers was in October of 2018, and since then the player base has increased by a staggering 20 million players. In today’s market, which is saturated with free-to-play games, this kind of growth is impressive. Minecraft is not free and costs about $26 on each platform. Some are also wondering how it has maintained popularity since its graphics are pixelated and it has such simple controls.

At its core, Minecraft is about creativity and imagination, which keeps players interested. Players can choose either survival or creative mode, each of which has its own unique features.

In survival mode, players must gather resources and build shelters to protect themselves from the monsters that spawn at night.  Creative mode, on the other hand, allows players to build whatever they can imagine, with infinite resources. It also has a multiplayer component, which allows them to create things with friends. Many players have built massive projects, sometimes by hand and sometimes with the use of programs to speed things up.

Minecraft isn’t going anywhere for now and, as long the game continues to receive updates, it will likely to remain relevant for years to come.
