High-ranking Call of Duty: Modern Warfare players are finding it impossible to use the game’s multiplayer modes in the wake of a recent update.

Infinity Ward is trying its best to address all of the concerns which have arisen since the title’s launch last month and they’ve done a pretty decent job so far. Even so, it’s been a bit of a task getting everything right.

There are still plenty of chinks to be ironed out, with balancing on the 725 shotgun still needed after the range was decreased. Players have also reported being unable to hack explosives through use of the E.O.D perk, which is obviously less than cool.

Additionally, a smaller section of top gamers are experiencing a bug that makes multiplayer modes unplayable. It’s not clear what the problem is exactly but the troubles seem to stem from a link between Ribbons from Officer Challenges and high-ranking players. Some players who have collected upwards of 90 ribbons report that, once they attain the rank, multiplayer fails to boot and the game simply crashes.

The title’s Ribbon challenges help players to step outside of their comfort zones and prompt tasks such as resupplying teammates or getting four uninterrupted kills in the kill feed. Completing these challenges garner XP boosts and an emblem is unlocked after every 10 completions. They’re really no big deal and, according to players who have completed many of them, it would be best to steer clear for now.

Fortunately, the developers are aware of the problem and are working on shoring things up. Multiplayer Co-Design Director Joe Cecot has announced that a fix is coming “very very soon” but we don’t know how soon very, very soon really is.

Infinity Ward hasn’t really done its reputation much harm with the release of Modern Warfare or the post-launch additions but this one is rather strange. One would do well to expect bugs in big multiplayer titles nowadays but one that restricts access to an entire mode by crashing is not all that common.

On the bright side, it appears to be completely avoidable by not completing too many Ribbon challenges or at least not too fast.

Modern Warfare is currently out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
