The delightful Mythic Ocean is a narrative-driven exploration game where you explore the ocean and meet some Gods. Your interactions and the choices you make on your journey determine which God rises up to create a new world, and what type of place it will become.
The prologue for the game is due to be released on October 7th. This taster gives you 30 minutes to an hour’s worth of gameplay and exploration, depending on how much you explore along with the choices you make.
Diving In
The first thing you need to know about Mythic Ocean is that it’s beautiful and immersive. The second thing is that when combined with the first-person camera, this stunning environment can be a little too immersive if you suffer from motion sickness.
Fortunately, the developers have thought of this and there are some settings you can adjust which will help. Go into the settings menu and turn off the camera animation and turn down the motion blur. In fact, they are both marked as being advisable to adjust in these circumstances. Once that’s done, get ready to jump into the ocean and speak to some Gods.
Discovering Gods
You’ll be led on your journey by different creatures whose interactions will guide you through each area. There’s also a sonar ability which is incredibly useful as it highlights anything you can interact with or any places you can visit.
As I began to explore, things around me changed, so it’s worth going back and speaking to different creatures again. Some of them offered new tasks and things to discover upon returning to them after I’d been to a new area or met a new God.
You’ll want to discover things because that’s the key to the game. This prologue allows you to meet some of the Gods and get a feel for the mechanics and interactions of the story. It also offers some beautiful ocean reefs, caves, and corals to explore.
Creating A World
You can interact with many creatures, and some of them offer rewards and tasks, depending on your interactions with them. This leads you down different paths, all of which have different outcomes.
After a while, one God will become more motivated than the others. This is directly influenced by your interactions, so make sure your choices are smart as you talk to the Gods. Their powers appear to be quite literally in your hands.
Once a God has risen above the others, they will create a new world based on choices they made after your discussions with them.
The Next Stage
The prologue stops at this point, leaving players desperate to discover if they will see these new worlds or merely hear about them.
Currently, there is little information about the game, but it sounds as if these worlds will have different outcomes with the aim to influence different Gods in new ways to see if you can create the world you desire.
There’s also a break-dancing crab, which I’m looking forward to. I already enjoyed the God of ocean parties (that’s not his actual name).
Musings,
Overall, Mythic Ocean was an enjoyable way to spend an hour, once I’d adjusted the settings. If you get motion sickness, I’d definitely recommend playing this prologue and making sure you can adjust it to your liking. because if you can, it’s worth the effort.
There’s no combat and no stress, just an evolving and unfolding narrative that leads to a conclusion. You can also spend time just journeying through the beautiful ocean, exploring the depths and encountering some random creatures.
I’m not sure how repeatable the game will be, as personally, I don’t tend to repeat narrative-driven games very often, but I know many players do.
If you’re looking for a relaxing game with delightful views, an intriguing storyline, an immersive environment, and no combat, then check out this prologue. It combines a visual novel with a choice-driven narrative and free-roaming exploration to create something that’s charming and enjoyable.
