Since its release, Borderlands 3 has sold over 8 million copies and received a warm reception from critics and fans alike. In recognition of the game’s runaway success, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford took the stage to thank Borderlands 3 fans and to provide some insight into the game’s post-launch life.

As part of the popular PAX East event, Gearbox Software teased upcoming content for other titles like Homeworld 3 and Risk of Rain 2 before introducing Pitchford to reveal the latest Borderlands content. But before diving into what the future would look like, Pitchford shared some statistics that the developers had collected, ranging from the collective playtime across all users (38,000 years), to the number of enemies players had killed since release (34.59 billion).

During the final minutes of the PAX presentation, Pitchford brought voice actors David Wald (who plays Wainwright Jacobs) and Cherami Leigh (who plays Gaige the Mechromancer) onstage to tease some upcoming content through a live reading from the latest DLC, Guns, Love and Tentacles. However, during the readings, key character Hammerlock revealed that he was unavailable fighting a Varkid queen named Hemivorous, entrusting his fiancé with finding their wedding planner. This, combined with previous trailer footage, led fans to believe that Hemivorous would be a future foe for players to face off against. Parts of the reading are available in the video below.

It is important to note that although these credible hints come straight from Gearbox itself, nothing is certain. When discussing Borderlands 3 DLCs 3 and 4, Pitchford warned that certain plot details could be subject to change. If the queen is not a part of the incoming DLC, it might not be ready for some time. While Hemivorous could certainly surface in Guns, Love and Tentacles on March 26, Gearbox has not stated the Varkid queen would be a boss outright.

Ultimately, fans should be excited for Borderlands 3. According to Gearbox’s roadmap, several fan favorites besides Gaige are returning. With the game’s Steam debut also en route, it’s clear that the developer is committed to building upon the Borderlands experience. The new events and constant updates should reassure wary newcomers that the game’s wry humor and quick gameplay are worth jumping into.

Borderlands 3 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright and Hammerlock releases March 26, 2020.
