After a 33 year hiatus, the DeLorean cars made famous by the Back to the Future movies are set to return to production thanks to law changes governing small scale car manufacturing.
Around 9,000 DeLoreans were made between 1981 and 1983 by the DeLorean Motor Company in Northern Ireland.
DeLorean expert Stephen Wynne of Texas began refurbishing the cars back in 1995, and now under the original operating name the DeLorean Motor Company will begin manufacturing new editions of the famous car.
“It’s huge for us. It means we’re back as a car company again,” Wynne told KPRC.
“There’s no reason to change the appearance of the car,” he added. “As we go into the programme, we’ll decide what areas need to be freshened up.”
Wynne says the hope is to have the first production car ready early in 2017, though you’re unlikely to see too many driving around the streets as they’ll cost in the region of $100,000 and will initially launch in quantities of only one per month.
