While Pokemon may be the more popular franchises overall, Digimon has built up its own respectable following, largely thanks to the well-received Digimon anime series. The original Digimon anime series in particular was quite popular, spawning a sequel series, films, and more. Other Digimon anime series have been set in other areas with different characters, but now Toei Animation is bringing back the original cast for a 2020 reboot.

The new Digimon Adventure anime series will feature the same cast of human characters and partner Digimon that fans will remember from the original show. The key difference is that the setting is being updated to actually be set in 2020. The new series will be a reboot, though it’s unclear how close it will follow the original show and what changes will be made to the story.

It’s possible that the new Digimon Adventure series is just an exact re-telling of the story from the original anime series, but with updated animation. The trailer leaves a lot to the imagination, so it’s hard to know what to expect at this point. The series is set to air in Japan this April, though, so Digimon fans shouldn’t have to wait too much longer to see what this new Digimon Adventure anime has to offer.

In the meantime, it will be interesting to see if this new Digimon anime has an impact on the Digimon video games. Bandai Namco has been publishing Digimon video games on a consistent basis for decades now, and one has to imagine that there would be some appeal to adapting the new Digimon Adventure anime series.

While a Digimon Adventure video game could possibly be in the cards, fans should expect Bandai Namco to continue with its various video game sub-series as well. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth was well-received by fans, and this year will see the launch of a brand new Digimon video game called Digimon Survive.

Between Digimon Survive and the new Digimon Adventure anime series, it seems fans of the franchise have a lot to look forward to this year. We’ll find out if the new Digimon anime series lives up to the hype come its April premiere, and hopefully news on a dubbed version comes sooner rather than later.

Digimon Adventure premieres in Japan this April.
