A far as we know, video games don’t have mechanisms in place to punish hubris. But at least a few Fortnite players have learned the hard way after gloating in the wake of putting an opponent down.

The use of emotes has become pretty popular in the gaming world and Fortnite is not short on those. Other titles like Destiny 2 and The Division 2 boast several cool ones as well. Fortnite, though, has taken the lead in the emote game, so much so, they’ve even gotten sued over it on more than one occasion.

The abilities are basically useless and there’s nothing to be had from employing them. However, they are pretty fun as they allow players to express themselves without having to speak.

Fortnite’s emote bank is filled with at least one for every situation. Whether you want to greet someone, join them in a dance session, or simply celebrate a kill, there’s an emote for every occasion.

For the time being, though, they’re prompting a glitch that has been leaving players quite annoyed as they’ve been at risk of getting cut down while attempting to use one. Past emote glitches have been mostly visual and players were still able to complete their matches when affected. But this new one is a little different, as pointed out by Reddit user ‘millk_man."

The player posted a video of himself dropping into the map’s Retail Row, speedily claiming some loot and taking an enemy out. The “Switchstep” emote was immediately prompted, leading to the user’s avatar getting frozen for around 10 seconds, with camera panning the only possible movement. The player’s weapons disappeared as well, leaving him both regretful and exposed.

He will think twice before attempting to gloat over the killing of an opposition player in future; his karma came rather quickly. But, at this point, we don’t know whether other emotes trigger the glitch.

If you want to keep on using the fun abilities, we’d suggest you do so when you have enough cover to break out into a dance and not get shot.

Epic has yet to comment on the glitch so there’s no word as it pertains to a fix. So maybe just do without them for now?
