When Left 4 Dead 2 launched, there were many who believed that it would be just another lack-luster sequel, charging for the same game that we bought a year before. Instead, fans were treated to a completely new game with numerous new modes and features.

Recently, a new feature became available to zombie killing fanatics: Mutation modes. With this, Valve promises to release a new game mode for Left 4 Dead 2 each week, replacing the one from the week before. While the question on gamers’ minds is whether Valve can keep producing fresh, exciting gameplay variants every week, there is no doubt that the idea is an interesting one.

This week’s mutation mode is called Bleed Out. In it, gamers will have to make their way through Campaign mode with a simple, but game-changing modification. Not only are health packs removed from the game, but the characters’ health bars will constantly be slowly draining. This means that you’ll have to rely on pain pills and adrenaline shots in order to make it out alive.

While I haven’t played Left 4 Dead 2 much in recent months, the introduction of these mutation modes has me thinking that I may just pull the game back out of retirement. While they may not be earth-shattering changes, it’ll definitely change up the way you play the game, which could make for some entertaining situations.

How do you feel about these mutation modes? Does the idea interest you, or do you feel that it’s a cheap cop-out to bulk up the game’s list of modes?
