Spoiler season for Theros: Beyond Death is well underway, which means Magic: The Gathering players are seeing brand-new cards on nearly a daily basis. Soon the full set will be revealed so that players can have some time to reflect on all of the information before the pre-release events on MTG: Arena and at local gaming shops, but for now card slingers are still taking things one card at a time.

The latest Magic: The Gathering spoiler offers a look at a brand new rare that fans of the White piece of the color pie are sure to be excited about. The card will need to be evaluated in the coming metagame to see what kind of uses it will have in Standard constructed decks, but its raw power for Limited is obvious at first look.

The new card was spoiled by IGN and is called Taranika, Akroan Veteran. The white rare has a mana cost of just three, but the double white makes it a little harder to cast. In a set that cares about Devotion to particular colors, that’s not necessarily a downside though…

A 3/3 for three is nothing to write home about but add on Vigilance and that massively powerful “when attacking” ability and this Human Soldier becomes a lot more interesting. Obviously the downside to the card is that it requires players to already have another attacking creature that is worse than a 4/4 indestructible. That is not a very tall order and white draft decks shouldn’t have much of a problem having a solid target for that ability by turn three or four. Expect this card to be an easy first pick unless there’s some powerful removal in the uncommon slot.

So far there are no Theros spoilers that seem to be as powerful as Oko, but that doesn’t mean the coming set won’t push the boundaries. Players still need to see the full list of cards and see a few pro-level tournaments play out to get a better idea of how this new set is going to impact the metagame.

Be sure to check back in the near future for more Magic: The Gathering strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, draw well, planeswalkers!
