Ninja has somewhat elevated his status within the Muslim community following his acknowledging Ramadan and turning his face camera off while eating during streaming, per Kotaku.
The popular streamer, like most Twitch stars, spends nearly all day in front of his computer. So it’s not unusual to eat or snack whilst entertaining the masses.
For Muslims and persons observing Ramadan, though, it must be hard to watch anyone eat. The holiday commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to the prophet Muhammad and spans a month (May 6-June 3). It’s no easy thing to celebrate as those who observe are to stay away from food from sunrise to sunset.
So when Ninja began chowing down on stream on the first day, he was duly informed that he was making things worse for viewers who were fasting. “Bruh, I’m fasting,” one viewer said, with several others joining in.
The streamer turned his face cam off moments after, issuing a quick apology. He’s been keeping it off during meals ever since.
“Sorry to the people who are doing Ramadan,” he said. “I’ll make sure to hide my screen when I eat for the rest of Ramadan.”
He even refused to reveal what he was eating while playing Fortnite with fellow streamers Faze Cloak and DrLupo on Friday.
“Don’t want to talk about it,” he said after they asked him what he was eating. “Dude, Ramadan is going on right now. I don’t want to talk about food. It’s why I’m hiding my cam.”
The move has earned Ninja some respect within the Muslim community and he’s been receiving some steady support.
“Mad respect,” a fan earlier this week. “I don’t care if he is the best player or not. He has to be the best streamer right now. I know it doesn’t bother a lot of Muslims if he eats or not. We stan Ninja.”
“This is so awesome to see that he took this into consideration,” another said on Friday. “Most people wouldn’t even think about this.”
This is quite the gesture from Ninja, despite not requiring much effort. Paying attention and considering the feelings of fans will always score you some points but we didn’t care to see him eat anyway - most of us are already very good at that.
