Nintendo has begun distributing software development kits for its upcoming NX console to third-party developers ahead of its reveal next year, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The website also claims to have been told by “people familiar with the development plans” that the hardware will “likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use”.

The console could be fairly powerful, too, the report suggests, with its sources claiming that Nintendo is aiming “to put industry-leading chips in the NX devices, after criticism that the Wii U’s capabilities don’t match those of competitors”.

Nintendo plans to unveil the new hardware in 2016, with rumours pointing towards a release later in the same year.

“We are increasingly of the idea that Nintendo might launch the NX in 2016 because of the softness of 3DS and Wii U,” one analyst told the site.
