Nintendo will continue to release games for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS following the launch of the Nintendo NX, CEO Satoru Iwata has suggested, telling shareholders that it would “be highly inefficient” to pull support for the platforms “right after” the console’s launch.
Speaking in Nintendo’s latest Annual General Meeting, Iwata explained that “when NX is launched, there already will be a certain volume of Nintendo 3DS and Wii U hardware widely existing in the market, so from a software business perspective, it would be highly inefficient to stop releasing titles for Nintendo 3DS or Wii U right after the launch of NX.
“Therefore, while we are preparing NX for the future, we are discussing within our internal development teams as well as with the second-party developers we co-develop software with and also with third-party software publishers about how to continue creating software for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. So, I believe that your point of concern should not happen immediately.”
Iwata adds that it “is a priority within the company to think about how we can satisfy the consumers who purchased [Wii U] to the maximum extent possible.”
While Nintendo has yet to detail its launch plans for NX – or even announce what the platform actually is – a rumour posted yesterday claimed that the firm plans to launch the console in summer 2016.
The report also claimed that Nintendo is aiming to sell 20m units within its first year on sale – higher, even, than PS4 managed.
The first details on NX are due to be revealed next year.
