Nvidia Shield, billed as the world’s first Android TV console, will launch in the US this May and across Europe later this year, Nvidia has announced.
Shield is built on the Android TV platform and boasts support for 4K video, including YouTube 4K.
You also get console quality processing capable of delivering Android native versions of Crysis 3, Doom 3: BFG Edition and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. More than 50 Android optimised games will be available to download. Capcom is also remastering Resident Evil 5 for the platform.
In addition, Shield is designed as a gateway to Nvidia’s GRID service, delivering an on-demand Neftlix type experience for games running at up to 1080p 60 frames per second. Users can access a catalogue of 50 titles – including Batman: Arkham Origins, GRID 2 and Metro: Last Light Redux – via a subscription, or buy new releases – Arkham Knight and The Witcher 3 – as and when they launch.
“Shield will change the way we enjoy digital entertainment at home,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA. “It’s an incredibly powerful, efficient and advanced living room entertainment device. It’s the best Android TV experience. And it can transform into a serious gaming machine. It’s made to game.”
Shield will launch in the US in May priced $199 including a controller.
