Nvidia is the latest company to announce a big cancellation due to concerns surrounds the coronavirus. Its GPU Technology Conference — which was set to run from March 22 to March 26 — will shift to an online-only format instead of being held at the San Jose Convention Center.

The convention was expected to bring over 10,000 industry experts together to discuss the latest and greatest in graphics processing. Featured speakers included staff from Google, Stanford University, Ericsson, and Nvidia. All these presentations aren’t necessarily being scrapped, however, as Nvidia is working to publish many of them online. The company is also trying to “schedule availability with [its] researchers, engineers and solution architects to answer technical questions” for individuals in the developer program.

CEO Jensen Huang will still be giving his keynote speech — which will be broadcast across the web — and all Nvidia-specific announcements will still be made in the same way. Attendees will receive a full refund for their pass, but the specifics are yet to be worked out.

As unfortunate as it is, reformatting the event was a smart move. It’s likely that many individuals and companies were already in the process of dropping out, which would have led to a lackluster conference. Plus, the threat of coronavirus is very real, with multiple cases confirmed in the United States. And with over 10,000 people ready to converge on San Jose, the probability of crossing paths with someone who has seen the virus would increase dramatically.

Nvidia isn’t alone in erring on the side of caution when it comes to public health. Niantic has cancelled Pokémon GO events in multiple countries, EVE Online cancelled Fanfest, and GDC 2020 has been postponed until the summer, when some experts believe the virus may become less infectious.

Thankfully, it sounds like most of the content from GTC will still be available — albeit without the exciting conference atmosphere and fanfare. Nvidia will be making numerous announcements in the coming weeks as it continues to post GTC content to its website. For more information, be sure to keep an eye on the official GTC 2020 page.
