Nintendo must reverse a worrying downward trend in both home console and portable system sales in the US if the NX is to be a success, figures published by digital games market analyst Daniel Ahmad have revealed.
Looking back over the last few generations it’s clear the Wii U and 3DS have under performed in the Americas.
Home Console sales in the Americas
- 34.00m -NES
- 23.35m -SNES
- 20.63m -N64
- 12.93m -GCN
- 48.64m -Wii
- 6.29m -NWU
Portable system sales in the Americas
- 44.06m – GB/C
- 41.64m – GBA/SP
- 59.93m – NDS Family
- 20.11m – 3DS Family
Whilst the Wii U’s failure has been well documented, you’d be forgiven for thinking the 3DS and associated systems had been a bigger success. 3DS has sold just over a third of what the previous Nintendo DS systems managed in the US.
“Portable dedicated consoles have been replaced by mobile gaming at a core and casual level,” Tweeted Ahmad.
“It started off well. But sales dropped considerably in the last few years. The demand for dedicated portables isn’t there,” he added.
So where does this leave the NX? The secretive gaming system is heavily rumoured to bridge the worlds of both home and mobile gaming, with a hybrid approach. However, with Sony and Microsoft being aggressive with mid-cycle updates for PS4 and Xbox One, and the mobile space dominated by increasingly powerful devices, this best of both worlds approach from NX may not appeal to either consumer.
