Video games have a rich history and a lot has changed since the early days of Pong. The always evolving technology has caused an exponential jump in gameplay, but also in graphics. The trend has only been slowing down recently, but seeing character designs from the early 80s next to current 3D models is jarring to say the least. The series that managed to successfully make the jump from the 2D to the 3D world are few and far between and it is always fun to look back on how far some of these franchises have come in the last three decades or so.
This quiz will require some knowledge of these early games, as you will be asked to identify a popular video game character from his or her earliest version available. Some of the characters, such as Mario or Link, are simple enough that they can be recognized even in their primitive form. However, some of the design changes are drastic enough that they might prove difficult for you to identify. Rest assured however: most of these have starred in games very recently. To be fair, we tried to limit the characters to the last two console generations.
So, can you take it old school and match these sprites to their character?
