One of Sony Worldwide Studios’ biggest exclusive games for the PlayStation 4 may be coming to a different platform, a new report claims. Rumors have been swirling about Horizon Zero Dawn, Guerrilla Games’ epic open-world action game, coming to PC for some time. Those rumors have been largely dismissed, given Sony giving no sign that it intends to pursue PC releases. Yet those rumors may now be proven correct, as reports say Horizon Zero Dawn will be launching on PC in 2020.
The report comes from Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, who cites three different anonymous sources to say that Horizon Zero Dawn is coming to PC in 2020. The sources were not authorized to speak to the press about the announcement, which is the reason for their anonymity. All three confirmed the PC port was in development with plans to release this year, but they weren’t able to provide further information or had their more specific details kept secret so as to keep their identities hidden.
The only other information provided about Horizon Zero Dawn coming to PC is that it’s likely coming to both Steam and the Epic Games Store. Even that detail has an asterisk, however, as the details have yet to be finalized. It’s definitely within the realm of possibility that the Epic Games Store pays for a large exclusivity deal with Sony so as to be the only place where PC gamers can buy and play PlayStation 4 games. Sony, however, may choose to remain storefront agnostic, but anything is possible.
Of note is how the article references Horizon Zero Dawn as “the first” PlayStation-exclusive game to be ported to PC. While no overt mention of other PS4 games being ported to PC was made, the language definitely hints that Sony has other games either planned or in development for PC. It’s possible that Sony will be exploring PC releases much more aggressively in 2020 and beyond.
Before it’s asked, the likelihood of Sony doing the same thing as Microsoft is on PC is extremely low. Microsoft, as many know, is releasing almost all of its Xbox Games Studios games on PC as well as console starting from launch. Sony won’t be doing this. Another report has already confirmed that Sony is planning to continue console exclusivity going into the PS5’s generation. Sony uses exclusives to sell hardware. If Horizon Zero Dawn proves popular on PC and Sony decided to continue releasing games on the platform, it will most likely continue to be older games rather than new releases.
Expect further news on Sony’s PC plans in the months to come, perhaps even during the rumored PS5 PlayStation Meeting in February.
Horizon Zero Dawn is available now on PS4.
