The 92nd Annual Academy Awards have come and gone and awards season finally has come to a close. As per usual, it was a long telecast with some truly head-scratching moments (can someone explain the Eminem performance?) but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences offered up some pleasant surprises to keep things interesting.

The biggest takeaway from the evening was the somewhat underdog success of Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite. 1917 came into the evening as the frontrunner, but once Parasite picked up the win for Best Original Screenplay early in the telecast, things started trending in the #BongHive’s direction. When the film eventually won Best Picture, becoming the first foreign language film to win the award, the audience reaction was loud and genuinely heartfelt. Parasite picked up four wins during the show, each time to much fanfare.

1917 still grabbed some wins for it’s technical proficiency, so it wasn’t shut out completely. In the acting categories, things went largely according to plan, including Laura Dern taking Best Supporting Actress and Brad Pitt gaining his first acting win for Best Supporting Actor. Oscar history was also made when a superhero-related movie, Joker, dominated the awards lists with 11 nominations and tonight it netted wins for lead actor Joaquin Phoenix and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. It’s not a huge haul for the DC Comics inspired film, but it feels like a victory for genre filmmaking.
