There’s a new Twitch channel operating that’s like a live nature documentary every day.
It’s called ourWildEarth, and it’s from the same folks who make WildEarth, a YouTube channel that does, well, kinda the same thing. The only difference with Twitch is that they have a live broadcast schedule instead of uploaded videos, although you can look at previously recorded broadcasts over on Twitch.
The Twitch version of WildEarth got started just a few weeks ago. It seems to take place in South Africa in and around the Sabi Sand/Greater Kruger Park area. They go out on daily expeditions to see whatever they can see, and what they see is quite a lot. Leopards, hippos, African wild dogs, and elephants are all standard fare for ourWildEarth.
Some of the channel’s popular videos include this one of a pair of elephants mating. You can’t really see much due to a fence sort of being in the way of the pachyderms’, um, “business area”, but you can still definitely tell what’s going on even without the safari leader spelling it out for you. Note how the rest of the herd takes up positions around the mating pair to defend them in case a predator shows up.
Or how about this video of a pair of leopards meeting in the wild? The female seems quite interested and even gets up on her hind legs like a meerkat in order to get a better view of the male.
This being a Twitch channel and not a documentary on the BBC, the wildlife experts can provide tons of information that you would otherwise never know about. For example, male elephants sometimes produce a green slimy substance from their genitals that smells like “sweet rotting leather.” Which is probably more than you ever wanted to know about elephants.
Twitch’s ourWildEarth broadcasts every day starting at 10 PM EST, which is about 5 AM Johannesburg time. Be sure to subscribe for even more weird animal facts that you will never be able to unlearn.
