The creators of Descent, Matt Toschlog and Mike Kulas, have joined forces to form Revival Productions and have been working away on Overload, a new six-degree-of-freedom shooter – a spiritual successor to the classic Descent titles.

The team is looking for Kickstarter backing of $300,000 which will enable the creation of PC, PS4 and Xbox One versions, with more money allowing for Mac/Linux and possibly even VR support.

Overload is described as “an all-new single-player game that combines the best of classic 6-DOF gameplay with modern graphics and technology. Destroy robots, rescue hostages, blow up the reactor, and escape before the whole thing explodes.”

There’s no multiplayer, just a 15 level campaign with a story written by Freespace 2 scribe and a return to the popular gameplay which never really made it out of the 90s.

Features:

  • Intense single-player action in 6-degrees-of-freedom
  • 15 level campaign filled with explosive combat and exploration
  • Story by the writer of Freespace 2
  • Breath-taking graphics and spectacular sound, with a soundtrack by Dan Wentz & Allister Brimble
  • More than a dozen sinister robot types and 3 massive bosses
  • 12 upgradeable weapons
  • 5 difficulty levels let you tune the game to match your abilities
  • Fully customizable joystick, gamepad, mouse and keyboard controls
  • Releasing on PC, PS4, and Xbox One (Mac/Linux is 1st stretch goal)

It’s also worth knowing that Overload is a totally different project to Descent: Underground, which is being created with the official license from Interplay.

At the time of writing Overload is off to a steady start with $41k of its $300,000 raised in just a day. A March 2017 release is being targeted.
