Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has died following a battle with cancer. He was 55. Iwata was president of the company for 13 years, having originally helped develop classic Nintendo titles Kirby, EarthBound and Balloon Fight years earlier at HAL Laboratory. He later led the company through three generations of home Nintendo consoles, starting with the GameCube following his appointment in 2002, through to Wii and Wii U. He also oversaw the launches of Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS....

Mads Mikkelsen, the actor behind one of Death Stranding’s main characters, has said that even he doesn’t understand everything he’s been told about the game. In an interview with film site Birth Movies Death, Mikkelsen explained that the game is “very intricate” and that he would “have to see” it before he is able to fully understand it. “I mean, you know [Kojima]. Nvidia’s acquisition of Arm was shaping up to be the largest semiconductor deal that we’ve seen in tech so far. But now, it seems that Nvidia could be abandoning its acquisition of the company. The deal that was going to cost Nvidia $40 billion USD raised many concerns from all corners of the world. Undeniably, it would’ve given Nvidia an edge and a massively prominent presence in the market. This new development comes from a Bloomberg report that shares some information regarding Nvidia’s current plans....

These are the main PC releases to watch out for on 13 February and there’s a mixed bag of Space Invaders, RTS action, medieval RPG fun and more. One of the big releases this week is Kingdom Come: Deliverance and it’s out today and will unlock at midnight PST/8AM GMT. Space Invaders Extreme hits the PC from Degica and Taito. Available now on Steam. Sequel to the 2014 Story of the Year award winning The Fall is unsurprisingly called The Fall 2: Unbound....

Outcast: Second Contact – the remake of 1999 PC adventure Outcast – will release on PS4, Xbox One and PC in March 2017, publisher Bigben Interactive has revealed. The remake, which is being developed by the original game’s developer Appeal, promises “cutting edge graphics and reworked controls for optimum immersion”. You can check out the first screenshots here. “Outcast takes place in the near future when Humanity has just discovered the existence of a parallel world, Adelpha,” says Bigben....

The evidence is mounting. Microsoft may not have announced a price for their Kinect motion controller, but they have listed the item in their online store for $149.99. Adding even more credibility to the $150 price is the recent suggestion that the unit actually costs that much to manufacture. According to the website Develop, a “highly-positioned, trusted source” has confirmed Kinect’s “$150 manufacturing cost.” Granted, technology is often sold at a loss, at least initially....

Although Marvel’s Midnight Suns is being developed by the XCOM team, it won’t follow that closely in its predecessor’s footsteps. Indeed, the game will still be a tactical RPG. However, in Midnight Suns‘ first gameplay trailer released today (via IGN), the game will utilize a card-battle system for character abilities. The game should attract plenty of tactics players, but it could be a treat for those who love Marvel and building up the perfect deck....

Minecraft has drawn a red line around the use of NFTs inside and adjacent to Microsoft’s hugely-popular survival sandbox game, effectively banning their use. Last night, Minecraft developer Mojang posted a blog laying out a clear policy on NFTs, which it said created “models of scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft”. “To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our client and server applications, nor may Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods, be utilised by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset,” Mojang confirmed....

Monster Hunter Rise takes even greater strides to welcome in new players than 2017’s World - and like World, sees a staggered release on PC after its debut on Switch. There’s plenty for both series veterans and newcomers - including the way you can explore biomes with wirebugs - as well as a list of wide-ranging weapon types you can use. Capcom has announced Monster Hunter Rise will get a new expansion entitled Sunbreak which will arrive in Summer 2022 on Switch and PC. A teaser trailer for the expansion debuted last night during the Nintendo Direct presentation. Details are currently scant, but we’re promised “an all-new storyline with more new monsters, new locales, gameplay elements, a new quest rank, and more”. Lovely. We were quite taken by Monster Hunter Rise when it released back in March....

On August 21 NetherRealm Studios confirmed that the infamous Batman villain Joker would be coming to Mortal Kombat 11 as a DLC character. NetherRealm’s version of the Joker was met with some disdain over its plain appearance at first, but that’s nothing compared to its latest comparison. Twitter user Travis Shaw’s now-viral tweet captured that Mortal Kombat 11’s Joker bears an uncomfortable resemblance to a parody version of the Joker, pornography parody version to be specific....

Most annually released sports games leave much to be desired. As a result of their short development cycles and limited resources, they very rarely contribute much of note to the industry. Perhaps the biggest offender of all is 2K’s long-running basketball series, NBA 2K. And if my time with NBA 2K21 is anything to go by, don’t expect that to change anytime soon. Back in NBA 2K17, 2K attempted to rework the shooting in order to raise the franchises’ skill ceiling....

Anyone who’s played The Witcher games knows that there’s a certain level of fantasy that goes along with the action. Call of Duty has dominated the multiplayer first-person shooter scene for a long time now, which makes sense considering how enjoyable the core gameplay is. But after so many sequels and Activision’s current excessive focus on the IP, it remains hard not to feel at least a little resentful toward the franchise. It doesn’t help that many of the series’ single-player campaigns stick to the same World War II setting. The upcoming Call of Duty Vanguard has no intention of breaking this tiresome trend....
